Avoiding litigation and building strong criminal cases requires officers to clearly understand the laws under which they operate.  Practical Defense Systems legal courses are designed to provide officers with current and detailed understandings of the laws that relate to policing.  Courses focus on:

  • The powers and functions of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the Government.
  • The purpose of Habeas Corpus and Ex Post Facto laws.
  • The applicable rights guaranteed by the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments.
  • Title 18 and 10 of the United States Code.
  • Introduction and understanding  of criminal law, common law, felony and misdemeanor definitions and selected Federal offenses.
  • Fundamental principles of witness testimony, jurisdiction and authority to detain or arrest.
  • Legal standards required to stop and question or frisk persons.
  • Determining the existence of probable cause.
  • Understanding the degree of force that may permissibly be used to detain or arrest.
